• In January 2020, all CPI cities in Sumatera Utara had
inflation, namely Sibolga by 0.20 percent; Pematangsiantar by 0.62
percent; Medan by 0.58 percent; Padangsidimpuan by 0.32 percent, and
Gunung Sitoli by 1.31 percent. Thus, the combined 5 CPI cities in Sumatera Utara in January 2020 inflation was 0.57 percent.

In January 2020, Medan inflation was 0.58 percent or an increase in the
Consumer Price Index (CPI) 102.35 in December 2019 to 102.95 in January
2020. Inflation occurred due to price increases indicated, namely the
food, beverage, and tobacco by 1.99 percent; housing, water, electricity
and household fuels by 0.28 percent; household appliances, equipment
and routine maintenance by 0.17 percent; recreation, sports and culture
group of 0.36 percent; the food and beverage / restaurant supply group
by 0.03 percent; and the personal care and other services group of 0.17
percent. The group that experienced deflation, namely clothing and
footwear by 0.04 percent and the transportation group by 1.13 percent.
While the health group, information group, communication and financial
services and education group did not experience changes in the index.

The main contributors to inflation in January 2020 in Medan include
cooking oil, white cigarettes, shallots, red chillies, security costs,
cayenne pepper, and clove cigarettes.

All 24 CPI cities on Sumatra Island recorded inflation. The highest
inflation in Meulaboh was 1.44 percent with CPI of 106.20 and the lowest
in Lhokseumawe of 0.08 percent with CPI of 103.04.
